About Me
Hello!
My name is Chiteisri.
Yes, it is a mouthful.
If you do not know me already, then you would have probably never heard of such a name. Every time I introduce myself to someone new, I find myself repeating it about four times. Three (failed) attempts in, and I am enunciating every syllable – “Chee -Tay -Shreee”.
<Cue in…nervous laughter, grumbles, jokes to follow>
This unique name is also uniquely challenging when you want someone to remember you after a fleeting interaction. Oftentimes in those brief, unimportant moments where your name is apparently required (e.g. a Starbucks) I just go by my surname which is “Devi”.
So here I am, as ‘the Wondering Goddess’ instead. A nom de plume that is a literal translation of my actual name. Chitta in Sanskrit means ‘the mind or intellect” and sri translates to ‘a female being/goddess.’ Devi is also synonymous with ‘Goddess’ – and in the Hindu Trinity of Goddesses, that is Goddess Sarasvati.
Now folks, I know that I am no goddess. Neither do I possess all the knowledge and intellect that I wish I did. But I am an ever-curious and wondering person.
I am cis-female, thirty-something and a law graduate. For a solid decade, I worked with different non-profits as a researcher and consultant on gender, environment and education policies.
I now write. But does that make me 'a writer'? Well, only you can tell me that!
All the great teachers advise “write what you know” – so this space is all about that.
